The North Island is very different in scenery and geographical makeup from the South Island of New Zealand. Known to the Maori as Te Ika a Maui, the fish of Maui. The North Island is shaped very roughly like a fish, and Hawke Bay on the east coast is shaped very much like a traditional Maori fish hook.

At the very heart of the North Island is New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo.

The North Island is part of the Pacific's 'Ring of Fire' and is still volcanically active. Although less mountainous than the South Island it possesses many landscape features resulting from volcanic activity. The Rotorua area is world renowned for it's bubbling mud pools and geysers.
